PCB manufacturing and assembly at MPE Electronics in 2020

When we look back at 2020, it is impossible not to mention the coronavirus pandemic. Covid-19 defined the year for us and the PCB manufacturing and product assembly industry as a whole, as it did for every other business in every other sector.

However, for all the challenges, we stood strong. This was thanks in no small part to the humbling dedication and hard work of our staff. Our sites were run well, we got orders out of the door and customers continued to receive a high standard of service.

The impact of Covid-19 and how we reacted

When the coronavirus pandemic hit the UK in Spring 2020, we reacted quickly, overhauling our PCB manufacturing and product assembly facilities and work practices to ensure the safety of our workforce and our customers. And we have continued to strengthen measures, moving forward.

This focus allowed us to approach the second lockdown on the front foot. By this time, the steps we had taken included the installation of screens in our socially distanced production areas, the implementation of temperature checks for all staff and visitors, the installation of sanitation stations across our sites and the operation of a comprehensive cleaning regime for work and rest areas.

How Covid-19 affected our business and planning

Covid-19 had a pronounced impact on our business, affecting requirements from customers in different ways. For example, while our work with defence industry clients remained largely stable, demand from medical sector customers was more affected.

We work with a range of medical manufacturers, providing assorted PCB manufacturing and assembly services, and the coronavirus pandemic impacted their needs differently. For instance, while we saw demand from producers of ventilation and analytical equipment rise notably, clients from the robotic surgery technology sector reduced their requirements.

As such, there was a need to reorganise and reconfigure and we are proud to report that we adapted quickly and efficiently, which is testament to the skill and commitment of our staff and the quality of our planning and infrastructure. It allowed us to maintain the high standards for which we are known.

A year like no other and our view on the future

The year was one like no other. It was a hard time and there were bumps along the road – we had to make some tough decisions – but we remained resilient and the team at MPE Electronics displayed great fortitude.

We continue to look forward. While the safety of our workforce and customers remains a priority as Covid-19 continues to shape our world, we are also ensuring that we keep growing. We are implementing new processes and standards to make sure that the service we provide remains of the highest quality.

So, it is a matter of great pride that we can look ahead with a positive attitude and a confidence borne of the way we managed the events of 2020. We know that we are ready to meet the challenges and take the opportunities that the future will present.
